This page is to try to find and share the obscure, weird, and unusual about writing and writing resources. Hopefully this will help most of your with your writing projects. In the future, I will try to post daily writing prompts as well.

In a previous blog, I mentioned the Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows. These are new words to describe the obscure.
You may also use these words to write a poem, or as a prompt.
Scabulous -adj. proud of a scar on your body, which is an autograph signed to you by a world grateful for your continued willingness to play with her, even when you don't feel like it.
Onism - n. the frustration of being stuck in just one body, that inhabits only one place at a time, which is like standing in front of the departures screen at an airport, flickering over with strange place names like other people's passwords, each representing one more thing you'll never get to see before you die - and all because, as the arrow on the map helpfully points out, you are here.
I'll leave you with these two obscure words and their meanings.
I have been reading books on black magic and have come across some interesting information. Next time, I will include the books so if you are interested, you may take a look.
If you know of an obscure place, object, or story you would like to share, email me and let me know. If you don't mind, I'll include it here.
Until next time....stay curious!

If you are interested in the weird and obscure, I came across a book called, Atlas Obscura, by Joshua Foer, Dylan Thomas, and Ella Morton.
This book has over 600 of the most curious and unusual destinations around the globe.
Be careful though, not all the places are safe and secure. I only know this because I am from Hawaii on the island of Oahu. One of the obscure places in this book is the Haiku Stairs, or some call it the Stairway to Heaven. That's just where you'll go if you chance this hike, to Heaven. This is off limits and closed to the public. It is illegal to climb these stairs. The stairs and trail has not been maintained since the early 1980's. It is rundown, broken with missing stairs in some places, and people have already died on this hike.
This hike should not be in the book, but it is, which makes me question the validity of all the other places listed in the book.
Remember, curiosity killed the cat. Beware of the places listed.

This information I'm sharing is not necessarily weird and unusual, but maybe dark and disturbing.
I found several books if any of you are into magic. All magic interests me, white, black, dark, and light magic. I have an open mind and read about all of it. I have come across a book called, The Black Arts, by Richard Cavendish. Originally published in 1967 and a new, 50th anniversary edition came out in 2017.
In this book, there is information on witchcraft, demonology, astrology, and other mystical practices. This book talks about Numerology and what it can do for you, The Black Magician's Universe, ritual magic and how to prepare your magic circle for a ritual, low magic, Necromancy and psychic attacks, and The Origin of Satan.
If this is what you're interested in, this is a great book.
Another book is Zak Bagans' Dark World. Most of you might know Zak Bagans from his show and his paranormal investigations. His book has been out a while and he talks of his experiences with haunted prisons, hospitals, insane asylums, hotels, slaughterhouses, and mansions. He believes there is another realm that is beyond death and he continues to try to prove that.
If you are interested in magic and dark arts, these books are definitely worth taking a look at.
The dictionary of obscure sorrows is a website created by John Koenig. These words defines neologisms for emotions that do not have a descriptive term.
You can go to www.dictionaryofobscuresorrows.com to get a list of these words.
To get started, here are some words and their definitions. What would be fun is to try to use these words in a poem.
flashover - the moment a conversation becomes real and alive, which occurs when a spark of trust shorts out the delicate circuits you keep insulated under layers of irony, momentarily grounding the static emotional charge you've built up through decades of friction with the world.
ambedo - a kind of melancholic trance in which you become completely absorbed in vivid sensory details - raindrops skittering down a window, tall trees leaning in the wind, clouds of cream swirling in your coffee - briefly soaking in the experience of being alive, an act that is done purely for its own sake.
8/22/2018 - added words:
Opia - The ambiguous intensity of looking someone in the eye, which can feel simultaneously invasive and vulnerable - their pupils glittering, bottomless and opaque - as if you were peering through a hole in the door of a house, able to tell that there's someone standing there, but unable to tell if you're looking in or out.
nighthawk - a recurring thought that only seems to strike you late at night - an overdue task, a nagging guilt, a looming and shapeless future - that circles high overhead during the day, that pecks at the back of your mind while you try to sleep, that you can successfully ignore for weeks, only to feel its presence hovering outside the window, waiting for you to finish your coffee, passing the time by quietly building a nest.
Writing prompts can help you with the start of a poem, short story, or even a novel. The following are just a few prompts to get your started:
The sound of grinding machines could be heard in the distance along with the stench of corpses, I knew this was going to end badly...
The children were alone, they looked to be about the ages of 6 - 10 years old, when they turned to look at me, I could see why they were alone...
The words in the book glowed brighter and brighter with each turn of the page...
I will share more obscure, weird, and unusual thoughts, prompts, and other information on a weekly basis. I'll update sooner than a week if time permits.
Please send us an email at email@example.com with any questions and/or information you would be interested in seeing or learning about and we will try to get to all of them here on this page of Misfits.
